Passage Discussion

by LSAT-Chang Mon Sep 05, 2011 7:27 pm

What could possibly be the scale for this passage?
I wasn't sure what the "debate" could possibly be.. The only thing I could come up with is:

Side 1 -- chinese realism art during cultural revolution successful (communist party)
Side 2 -- chinese realism art during cultural revolution unsuccessful (scar movement, native soil)

The word "successful" is probably not even correct -- but I couldn't come up with what exactly the "debate" was, if there is one!

Please help!!

Here again, no debate is present!

We have a response to the Cultural Revolution.

You can use a scale in the sense that it will be one-sided and that everything falls under it.

Cultural Revolution: Mao required artists to paint social and political realities. (Realities = The reality he wanted to convey!)

Response to this:

Scar Movement: Polar opposite of the "realism" of the Cultural Revolution! (Mental note that this is second and part of last paragraph)

Native Soil: Scar Movement gave rise to this one. This movement was eventually trivialized due to the fact that artists were basically painting what Western galleries and collectors wanted to see. (Mental note that this is last paragraph)

Thanks Timmy!! Since I don't perform so well on the reading comp, I always doubt myself when I don't find a scale (I think that it is just me) so I can't trust myself haha, well it makes me feel better that there really was no debate in this one after all. Thanks for all your help!!

Generally, when you have a situation that is a one-sided affair, those passages are easier.

The scale is a visual response to a lot of information. You can build it on one side, yet simply never have an opposing side develop.

Always anticipate that another side will develop in the next paragraph. Then, when it does not, you will be like, "Wow, this is just developing the point further with no opposing side."
