Passage Discussion

by LSAT-Chang Tue Sep 06, 2011 6:40 pm

Does anyone have a clue as to what the scale might look like for this passage? I didn't find "two" sides -- so didn't figure out a scale for this one, but I know that every passage can have a scale, so was wondering what others came up with. It just seemed to me like a history of the word "social group", which led me to the correct answer in Q26, but saw no "debate" overall.

Agreed. It read more like a long LR passage to me.

i.e.,
- Women persecuted on account of gender are likely candidates for asylum.
- Even though gender not specifically protected, it is broadly protected under "social group"
- Explanation + Support for above assertion (UN, UNHCR)
- Implication of support from UN, UNHCR

I recall we had a discussion about how you notate stuff to the side of every paragraph. Is this strategy still working out best for you? What you provided above looks fantastic -- exact organization of the passage! I have trouble doing that, but was wondering if it doesn't take too much of your time writing stuff to the side??

Yup. Still takes me longer. I'm currently working on getting my overall time to 36-37 minutes for RC. Obviously I'd have to guess on 1-2 questions-- I can live with that.

Right now I still run out of time and end up guessing on 3-5... way more than I should. But this is down from 4-6! I can only hope that by d-day, I'll be down to 0-1, while increasing accuracy on questions attempted. Fingers crossed :-)

I don't understand the main point of the 4th paragraph...especially after "Yet" "Further," "But"...How does the argument go on??

Thank you

Here's a breakdown of the passage map for this passage:

P1: Overview of gender-based asylum/how women become refugees under the "social group" category

P2: Background of the term "refugee" and creation of "social group" category

P3: Argument for a broad definition of "social group" + name of prominent group who supports it

P4: Further elaboration on the significance of the group (UNHCR) supporting the broad interpretation

Hope this helps!
