Q 20

by einuoa Fri Sep 26, 2014 12:53 pm

My thought process for Q 20 -

It's a broad question, so I'm just going to dive into the answers.

A) The passage doesn't discuss clinical trials in detail, so I don't know if they are conducted to meet the appropriate ethical standards or not.

B) This one was really tempting -
We know that by adhering to the standard of theoretical equipoise, few clinical trials would take place. With a more reasonable ethical standard, would more clinical trials take place? Intuitively, I want to say yes, but this isn't supported by the passage. The author doesn't discuss that more would take place.

C) Yep! Line 20-21 "an ideal hardly attainable in practice" in reference to theoretical equipose.

D) We don't know at all if they think these ethical requirements are adequate or not. We know that the author thinks its too strict, but is the author representative? Who knows?

E) Most comparative clinical trials? Although this is discussed in the third paragraph, it was not mentioned as "most comparative clinical trials."

C it is!

Hi all,

I am wondering whether B is wrong because the question is asking for "the true following" instead of asking "which one could be inferred from this passage". So I think if the question asks "which one of the following could be inferred," B would be the right answer.

I basically got the same problem with XinA249.

For "which is true" questions, should we consider ONLY undisputed factual statements that can be directly or indirectly known with the psg, or judgemental statements can also be included for consideration?
I unilaterally prefer the former interpretation for "which is true" questions, so I eliminated C because I think it is a judgemental statement (argubly an intermediate conclusion that supports the overall main conclusion/argument).

But the answer key is C......so I am wondering:

1) is it because the only-factual-statement interpretation is incorrect? Or because C IS factual statement instead of judgemental statement?
2) if the answer to the above question is "because the only-factual-statement interpretation is incorrect", is it generally applicable (or commonly applied) to "which is true" questions in RC? Or it is not how such questions generally go?
