Correct answer (E)....but, will someone set this up for me?

I intuitively answered this, but I am having trouble justifying it to myself.

Must be True question so we're most likely dealing with conditional logic in the stim and that seems to be the case here.

Here's how the conditional logic works out

Everyone sitting in the room ---> Just registered for a beginner's tennis clinic

J, T, and M were all in the room (so we know they registered for a beginner's tennis clinic). And we also know from the last sentence that if you're an accomplished Tennis player then you did NOT register for a beginner's tennis clinic.

So we know that J, T, and M have registered since they were in the room and everyone in the room registered. And we also know that accomplished tennis players did not register. So we can infer that J, T, or M are not accomplished tennis players since accomplished tennis players don't register for the clinic.

E is correct because it tells us J nor T are not accomplished tennis players which is the same inference we derived.

I think solving this intuitively is the best way, but if I had to diagram it...

S -> RBT
JMT -> S
ATP -> ~RBT

Connect them all,

JMT -> S -> RBT -> ~ATP

(E) Neither John nor Teresa is an accomplished tennis player.

Neither X nor Y = NOT X and NOT Y
NO A is B = A is NOT B

~John + ~Teresa -> ATP
~ (A or B) -> ATP
A or B -> ~ATP

And this matches up with the connection I made from the stimulus

Let me run through the wrong answers here.

(A) is wrong because they might have PLAYED tennis before. We don't know that.

(B) is wrong because they might have registered for other clinics, too. We don't know that they ONLY registered for this one, although we do know that they DID register for this one.

(C) is wrong because there could still be other people who registered for the clinic who aren't sitting in the office.

(D) is wrong because there could have been other people sitting in the office, too.

what we know:

If sitting in the waiting room (WR) at 9am ------------->Beginner (B)

Contrapositive: if NOT B --------> NOT WR

By taking the contrapositive we can connect the above statement with the below statement.

If Accomplished (A) -------------> NOT B

Next we can combine these 2 statements into one.

if A-------> NOT B ---------->NOT WR

Contrapositive

If you were in the WR (which John and Teresa were) then you are a beginner and if you are a beginner then you are not accomplished.

WR ------------->B-----------> NOT A
