Q1 - Frequently, people who diet

by jardinsouslapluie5 Fri Aug 24, 2012 11:26 pm

I know this is the first question, but after I read the explanation on the book, I still can't understand why (D) is not correct.
Could you explain please?
Thank you.

The info is describing something like this:

Say Harry usually eats 2000 calories per day. He has been eating that much for years and has always stayed the same weight.

Then, he decides to go on a diet, and starts to only eat 1200 calories per day.

He loses weight! In the process, though, his body learns to run off 1200 calories per day.

Once Harry has lost as much weight as he wanted to lose, he figures "now I can go back to eating normally!"

He expects that eating 1200 calories a day will cause him to continue losing weight, while his normal rate of 2000 cal/day previously kept his weight steady.

Unfortunately, when he returns to eating 2000 cal/day, his body actually gains weight! Why? His body had recalibrated itself to 1200 cal/day, so while 2000 was previously a normal, weight-maintaining amount, now 2000 is an excessive, weight-gaining amount.

(D) is saying that if Harry wants to avoid gaining weight after his diet, he'll have to eat less than 1200 calories.

That's incorrect. If Harry continued to eat 1200 calories, he would not gain weight.

I think what you really want (D) to say is this:
"They will have to eat even less than the amount of food THEY ATE PRIOR TO DIETING if they are to avoid gaining weight after they stop dieting."

This would be saying that Harry needs to eat less than 2000 cal/day or else he's going to gain weight.

And this is what (C) says.

Make sure you're carefully reading the sentence in the stimulus that says, "when they stop dieting and go back to eating amounts of food that would have just maintained their weight in the days before the diet ... they produce excess weight."

This is saying if you go back to your pre-diet eating habits, you'll gain weight.

(D) is saying if you stick to your diet eating habits, you'll gain weight.

Hope this helps.

Seeing that there are not many explanations for PT A, I will go ahead and do some, for my benefit and others as well.

-So, first thing is first -> Identify the type. It is a MSS question, so it theoretically should have everything inside the stimulus. We shouldnt have to infer too much outside of it.

1.People who diet become trapped in a cycle.
2. Why? - body becomes used to low calorie intake
3. THUS, when they stop, they overdose on calories, because they arn't used to it.
4. So, these extra calories produce extra weight.

After doing that, I get the idea that if you want to maintain your lean weight, then you shouldnt go back to pre-diet calorie levels.
So, I go to the answers with this in mind.

(A) - "BOUND TO" is too strong, and this strongness is not matched in the stimulus. Further, no one said that poeple will go back to pre-diet levels!!! Eliminate..

(B) NOTICE: This AC says what people "should" do. However, this "should" business is always sketchy if not mentioned in the stim, And here, its never mentioned. How can we infer what people should do? plus, maybe there's a solution to the gaining weight problem, so that proves that the Answer choice is just ridiculous.

(C) This contains "Must", which always get me as a strong word. Yet, if we read the rest of the Answer, it make sense, and is fully inferable from the stim.

(D) Even less? This is introduced material, and I dont like it. Throw it away. This is an inference Question. We cant tolerate outside stuff.

(E) Again, like (B), who knows? maybe there is a remedy. Plus, it contains NEVER and ALL. just too much for my liking.

This question is completely wrong and I had to stop the test in order to look up the answer, which was the one I chose but only because the others were easier to eliminate. Answer (C) is wrong because someone can eat the same amount of food, or even more food, and lose weight. The amount of food is not the same as the amount of calories in the food. Someone can eat 10 pounds of salad a day (higher weight and volume) and they would lose a tremendous amount of weight if they did. I thought this concept was common knowledge.

Can anyone explain why I'm wrong about this question being incredibly flawed?

Why is it a problem to choose an answer choice that talks about what you should/shouldn’t do? Is it an inherent problem or is it only problematic due to the content of the answer choice? Is that only for MSS/MBT questions?
Is B wrong solely because it says "should" or are there additional reasons? I thought B would have been fine so long as the person continued to diet but if he stopped and returned to his original diet, then that is where the problem is
