Q11 - In 1990 major engine repairs

by b91302310 Tue Sep 14, 2010 1:29 pm

Could anyone explain more about the correct answer (C) and the relationship between the cars manufactured in 1960s and the cars repaired in 1990, which had been built in the 1970s?

Thanks!

Happy to.

If answer choice (C) is true that the older a car is the more likely it is to discarded as scrap, then the figures make sense.

in 1990:

10% of cars made in the 1970's had major engine work.
5% of cars made in the 1960's had major engine work.

Why were older cars less likely to receive engine work? Well if older cars are more likely to be discarded, then if someone has a car that needs engine work, their chances of tossing it rather than fixing it are greater, if it's a car from the 1960's. I guess it's related to the notation that at some point it's just not worth it to keep spending money to fix these cars.

Does that make sense?

Why is the answer not D?

I had trouble between C and D.
D states that simplified engine designs were incorporated so engines were less complicated. Wouldn't more major engine repairs be performed because the engines are simpler?

It could be that the cars from the 70s had simpler engines that made engine repairs less complicated. But you are assuming that simpler engines prolongs the life of a car

That is a fair assumption but does not really help. If the 70s had simplified engines could it also be that they did not need repairs. In that case, this choice works against what is stated in the stimulus.

I believe the goal of this question is to see that you are dealing with a % of cars that had repairs later in the 90s based on the total amount of cars from the specified time frame being the 60s or 70s.

Choice C is explained well by mshermamn
If some the cars from the 60s didn't make it into the 90s then there is a smaller group who might need repairs.

I hope what I wrote helps, if anyone wants to add or correct, much appreciated.

Is the answer choice not E because it uses the word 'could have' and 'had' ? which doesn't give a clear sense of if it was ACTUALLY performed.
