Q11

11. (D)
Question Type: Conditional

Here’s another "must be true" question. We’re given two conditions: there are six messages, and L is fifth. Let’s put those into our diagram immediately:

Image

Is that all? Of course not! We’re looking for inferences. Let’s think about those first and last slots. If we put H there, it seems fine. But if we try to put in J, we have a problem: with L in the fifth slot, there’s no room for the HJ chunk. So we know H is first and sixth, and J is second. That leaves J and L for spaces three and four. Here’s where that last rule comes in _ good thing we put the asterisk next to it! Since only one J can go in the first three positions, we know L must be third, and J fourth:

We’ve once again reached the pinnacle of excellence for "must be true" questions: a fully filled-in diagram. Turning to the answer choices, we see that (A), (B), and (C) are all false according to our diagram. (D), on the other hand, says that J comes fourth, just as we inferred. We can circle (D) and head to the last question.

Does not it violate the #3 that there is only one J on the day after receiving one from Hilary?

You're asking if
H J L J L H
violates rule 3?

Rule 3 says
"exactly one time, we need to see J come the day after H".

How many times do we see J come the day after H?

One time, in spots 1 and 2.

Looks like we're complying. Let me know if you're interpreting rule 3 some other way.
