Q12

by Nina Wed Apr 03, 2013 10:51 am

i know in this senario we have:
SS SS L L L
FF FF F M M

and each of this five combinations will take up one habitat.

i just guessed this right since i thought the easiest way to avoid
S L to encounter is to put both SS SS
F M FF FF

either in the first two or the last two habitats. am i on the right track?

Thanks!

Yeah, you've got it.

Good job writing out the inventory for this question.

Given that we have 2 male lizards and 1 female lizard, and they each get their own habitat, we know our five habitats will be (in some order) this:

Lm | Lm | Lf | Sf, Sf | Sf, Sf

Since we have to watch out for Lm being next to Sf, the only way to create a buffer between them is to put the Lf into habitat 3.

The two male lizards could be 1 and 2 or 4 and 5.

Consider any alternative ... if I put the male lizards in 1 and 3, then I wouldn't be allowed to put female snakes in 2 and 4. That means I'd have 4 female snakes to cram into habitat 5.

If I put the male lizards in 1 and 4, then I wouldn't be allowed to put female snakes in 2, 3, or 5.

Etc.

Nice work!
