I felt A in its original form ( not negated ) would have broken the argument. The conclusion is stating the drug had no effect so (A) in its original form would have worked b/c it is stating that the drug would have had an effect? I thought if we negated the answer and it destroyed our conclusion that would be the correct one? I'm lost as to how A works here.

It depends on what you were taking as a drug. Drugs could be illegal, we all know them, but there could some others like https://www.worldpharmazone.org/buy-modalert-online-200-mg and they are to be shown on drug test as well. It's just a matter of is allowed and what is not. I don't think you will get in trouble for that.
