I struggled with this question.
I thought (D) was the answer until I saw the word "most effective."
So I picked (C) instead.
Will someone help me understand what makes D a better answer than C?
Thanks in advance!

We have to start by developing some short mental paraphrase of Dunham's work in anthropology and choreography.
I'd probably think something like:
she studied Caribbean dancers for the sake of seeing their African influence ... she learned how to do their dancing ... she then blended some of that style with some of the modern dance she knew from Chicago ... she ultimately got African influence into modern dance.
If I tried to make that more generic (so that it's more adaptable to other topics), I might think:
- studied something exotic, learned how to do it, looked for its older influences
then
- used that knowledge to blend the exotic/old with the familiar/modern
Let's go through the answers --
(A) Why are there two people in this analogy? Dunham did both the anthropology and the choreography herself.
(B) Why are there two people (i.e. the researcher and the pharmaceutical company) in this analogy?
(C) Why are there two people in this analogy?
(D) Okay, looks decent. The Brazilian teacher goes off somewhere exotic, learns some stuff, and then brings it back home and incorporates it into stuff he teaches (Dunham incorporated the Caribbean/African dance ideas into her own teaching)
(E) Hmmm, only one person here. That's good. The Italian designer does some exotic research (although it's not clear he traveled anywhere to do so), and then he incorporates his knowledge into a book about fashion design. Incorporating the exotic knowledge into a research book isn't as good a match as 'teaching it to the people back home' like in (D). Also, fashion design is the only mode of inquiry/expertise. Dunham (like the question stem suggests) was involved in anthropology AND choreography. It sounds like this Italian dude was just into fashion design.
Meanwhile, (D) the only other viable choice, featured a person who was involved in teaching AND social psychology.
So (D) wins.
I agree with you that "the most effective" is a random phrase that doesn't clearly match up with anything from the passage.
But we're not picking a perfect answer, just one that is most analogous.
If we're looking for an answer that gives us someone who went and studied another culture and then brought that knowledge back home to incorporate into her other field, (D) is the only thing close to what we're looking for.
Hope this helps.
