Q14

by andrewgong01 Thu Sep 14, 2017 5:40 pm

I need help with ruling out "D". I chose "D" and I don't think I read Choice E; otherwise I ,ay have been tempted into "E".

For "D" my support for "informal observations of non trial uses" comes from Lines 46 when the author brings up an analogy to politicians where the strategy seems to work. The "CONTROLLED studies" refers to the court simulations; it is controlled meaning that it is a lab experiment and hence it is referring to a court simulation.

For "E", "research not directly related" referred to the psychology experiments (e.g. if you prime people ahead of time you have a "bad" past it could enhance your credibility/ethos) whereas the latter part of "E" directly and correctly points to the simulated trial situations. I accept that "E" is "correct" and understand how to get here but I am unsure with what I am missing with "D" to rule out "D".

Other Choices

A: Surveys were never brought up ; scope
B: Surveys were not brought up; scope
C: Records of judges were not brought up; scope.

I was using lines 11-20 as my Proof Window here, so I wasn't as tempted by (D), but you made a good case for it!

I think we'd either have to pick on the PLURAL form of 'observations', since line 46 is only one observation ... or (hopefully more concretely) ... we pick on the idea of "CONTROLLED" studies, since we were never told that sort of information.

In saying "courtroom behavior", they might have been intending to disqualify (D), since were told in 11-12 that they haven't done any research in 'actual trials' (in an actual courtroom?).

But since it's "courtroom behavior", you're just describing the behavior, not the setting. Thus, it seems fair to say that someone exhibited courtroom behavior, even if it's a mock trial in a science lab somewhere.

So I think it comes down to
we only have one informal observation
+
we're not sure if it's a controlled study
+
we don't have to work as hard to match up (E)
