Q14

Could someone help clarify the rationale for D over C?

Upon review, I see that C discusses expertise rather and superior performance, and speaks to differences rather than an explanation of the differences in performance.

However, I was a bit thrown off by D since it only speaks to Training and does not bring up motivation. I felt it was only a partial answer of the main point.

Thanks!

Like tons of wrong answer choices, (C) is just wrong because it's too strongly worded.

The author wasn't arguing that innate characteristics are IRRELEVANT.
She was arguing that they are NOT THE PRIMARY DETERMINANT.

In her thesis sentence in line 23-27, she says that exceptional performance arises "predominantly" from learned rather than innate stuff.

And in 45-47, she provides an example of an exception ... an innate factor like height clearly CAN be relevant to superior performance.

I see why you were hoping for "motivation" to be in (D), but prioritize things that ARE wrong vs. things that AREN'T as good as they good be.

I think 'training' serves as an umbrella idea that relates to how much you've trained, which relates to how motivated you were to train.

Hope this helps.
