Q14

by kateleonawalker Thu Nov 10, 2011 5:05 pm

What is the best way to answer Q13 - Q17? I seem to be getting stuck with having way too many options to consider, even though my diagram was identical to the one provided on the forums. It seems that the V-R-H and L-S-P or P-S-L chains are not constricting enough to answer the questions quickly enough, am I missing key inferences? Thanks.

Hmm, it seems like something is off in your approach to this game, as the questions should fall pretty easily. It may be that either you're forgetting about the (PV) or (PS) rule, or that you don't yet have a firm grasp on the tree diagram.

Let's take #14 for example:

We know that L isn't on Saturday, so it must be P. That leaves us with V - R - H - P and L - S also connecting to that final P. We should keep in mind the '(PV) or (PS)' rule. Since P and V are far apart, we must have PS. So, this means we have V - R - H - SP and L is floating somewhere before the S.

We're looking for something that can't be true.

(A) sure - why not? Either L or V is first.

(B) that works if L is on Wednesday or Thursday.

(C) that works if L is on Thursday.

(D) that works if L is on Tuesday.

(E) no way!

Post in other threads if you want help with those questions, though I think if you take a look, you'll be able to crack them all on your own.

I think I'm missing something. I got Q14 correct, but through a length plug a chug process which just about cost me the last game in this section. Why is it we know P is last if L isn't?

These are our three rules:
V - R - H - _+
(P v/s)
P/L - S - L/P

If L isn't on Sat, that doesn't seem to tell us much. I would ask myself,
"Who COULD be on Saturday?"

It can't be L,
can't be S
can't be V, R, H

So it has to be P.

__ __ __ __ __ P

At that point, we have
L - S and V - R - H

Do I know whether it's PV or PS?

I do, since V couldn't be in Fri next to P, but S could be.

__ __ __ __ S P

What's left is V - R - H and L (anywhere).

But we've already gotten the answer, (E).
