What is the main difference between answer choice (C) and (D)? Is it just that (C) is too narrow in scope?

This reply probably came a little late but since I struggled with the same problem perhaps my attempt to answer will be useful for any future reference to this thread.

(C) is incorrect because the passage does not says the at sociologists had views to the contrary. In fact, in lines 4-8, it says that sociologists' approach is usually to focus on only one of these forms and exclude the other, which imply that they can accept the mutual influence even if they choose to only study one side of it.

(D) is correct per the first paragraph (and the second paragraph is the "application").

Is E wrong because the author never mentions "the shortcomings of traditional historical methods"? I was stuck between D and E, and only went with the latter because I didn't really understand what D meant...

E says the 'shortcommings of traditional hostorical...', actually, they are sociologists' see Line5-8
