I understand why C is right, but why is D wrong when it is pretty much stated in the last paragraph?

(D) doesn't answer the question being asked.

The question asks us to identify a "human characteristic FOR WHICH the evolutionary psychologists have a bad explanation."

(D) is something the author thinks those psychologists actually DO. It is not a human characteristic that the psychologists try to explain.
I host free online workshop/Q&A sessions called Zen and the Art of LSAT. You can find upcoming dates here: http://www.manhattanlsat.com/zen-and-the-art.cfm

(E) is incorrect because evolutionary psychologists don't propose an explanation for "caring for some things for their own sakes." This isn't given as something they try to explain, it's given as a motivation that the author believes is possible that is ignored by evolutionary psychologists.

As for the other answer choices that haven't yet been addressed on this thread:

(A) is incorrect because passage B doesn't talk about living in small communities.

(B) is incorrect because this is evidence cited by the evolutionary psychologists but isn't the behavior they're trying to explain.

(C) is correct. Lines 44-47.
