Re: Q16 - Body temperature varies over a 24-hour peroid

You were focussed on causation, which is an important reasoning structure on the LSAT. But look at the question type. This is a Must be True question in the Inference Family. This question type almost never relies on causation as the reasoning structure. Instead, you're much more likely to see conditional logic or a comparison. In this question, the reasoning structure is conditional logic with one of the terms containing a causal relationship. We know the following:

1. low body temp causes slow reaction speed --> reaction speed increase if body temp is increased
2. ~reaction speed increase if body temp is increased

We can infer by contrapositive:
~low body temp causes slow reaction speed

This is expressed in answer choice (C).

Incorrect Answers
(A) could be true. But is not supported by the statements. The only thing we know is that low body temp does not cause slow reaction speed.
(B) could be true. But is not supported by the statements. The only thing we know is that low body temp does not cause slow reaction speed.
(D) is contradicted.
(E) is contradicted.

Q16 - Body temperature varies over a 24-hour peroid

by dmtavera1 Wed Sep 14, 2016 3:43 pm

Can someone help me figure out why I changed my answer from C to A.

I had trouble following this from beginning to end.

My reasoning went something like this,

Body temp varies, low point between 4-5 a.m. The speed of reaction varies WITH body temp, (okay some kind of correlation) then they tell us that that low body temp does NOT cause a slow reaction.

I had C, considered it, looked at A then erased C and circled A

Can someone give me a full breakdown of this question, so whenever I see something like this in the future I know what to do?
