Q16 - Scientific Research

by fadams Thu Aug 28, 2014 10:18 am

Can someone comment on my approach to the question?

Question:

B [scientific research will be properly channeled] whenever A [those who decide which research to fund give due weight to the scientific merits of all propsed research]. But C [when government agencies control these funding decisions], D [political considerations play a major role in determining which research will be funded. and whenever D [political considerations play such a role], E[ the inevitable result is that scientific research is not properly channeled].

A - no proper role in its entirety is not mentioned, simply what happens when gov control funding decisions.
B - inevitable? gone
C - C [giving political considerations a major role in determing which scientific research to fund] is incompatible (not both relationship) with A [giving proper weight to the scientific merits of proposed research] = C->D->E->/A, thus C->/A
D - /B -> C
E- inevitably be neglected? gone.

thanks.

Good job!

I think (D) was a little unclear the way you wrote it but I see that your logic is correct.

I am in the process of studying all MBT's/Inference questions. From reading the post I think I got the answer right. "C". However, can someone please break this down for me? Preferably using a diagram like the individual did in processing the answers? I am intrigued by this and really would like to learn to use the diagram moving forward with MBT's/Inference but I need some sort of understanding. Thanks in advance. :)

Sorry for the delay in responding! Looks like your question fell through the cracks.

The previous poster did a good job breaking it down into a diagram, as far as diagramming goes. I would try not to rely too heavily on formal diagramming, anyway. Making notes to yourself in the margins (I find) is a helpful tool in Inference (including Must Be True) questions, but don't assume "formal" diagramming is necessarily the best solution always.

Hope this helps!
