Question Type:
ID Information
Answer expected in lines/paragraph:
The keywords "1990s", "focus in the study of women's history shifted" show up most explicitly in the first sentence. It shifted from a focus on individual women to a focus on gender. But the rest of P1 and P2 go on to elaborate about what that means, in more detail.
Any prephrase?
[during 1990s, shifted to …] studying gender instead of individual women.
If it's not that literal, then it would probably be the descriptions of gender relations on 7-11 and 24-26.
Correct answer:
A
Answer choice analysis:
(A) Yes. Not tempting on a first read, but this is an elaboration of what a focus on gender means, according to lines 7-11. "Explored the system that underlay interactions" (8-9) = "investigate the systems that shaped the interactions".
(B) This is more the opposite. This sounds like focus on women, not gender.
(C) This is just trying to entice us by saying the word 'gender'. But what they meant by that in the passage had nothing to do with the gender biases of scholars.
(D) Not a critique we're looking for … a shift from individual women to gender relations.
(E) Definitely have to read this one more closely. They do talk about how articles about women focused on their imagined domesticity in line 15. But the historians in the 1990s were not DOCUMENTING SHIFTS in the concept of domesticity. They weren't saying that domesticty was changing over time. They were saying that domesticity informed the atmosphere in which women affected culture and politics.
Takeaway/Pattern: We would probably guess that LSAT wasn't going to be so easy as to just literally give us a regurgitation of the 1st sentence, so it's worth reading until the end of that train of thought, to make sure we're harvesting all the buzzwords. Instead of saying "shifted to GENDER", we had to code swap that for "gender relations", which was then defined as "exploring the social systems that underlay the relationships of men and women",
