I'm still very confused with this question... I was stuck between C and E, and ultimately went with C. Couldn't we view it as the author confusing that a certain event occurred (fossils were discovered) with having established the cause of that event (the ice sheet must temporarily have melted)? I'm not really seeing what's wrong with C...
