Q18

by cyt5015 Thu Jan 09, 2014 12:39 pm

Can someone explain why A is not right? I was debating between A and B, but chose A eventually. Thank you!

The author ends up feeling what way about renewable energy systems in the developing world? Positive. She's hopeful. But she's also careful about that optimism: we get both an example of a situation that failed and why, and an example of a situation that didn't fail and why. We want an answer choice that captures all of this.

(A) is tempting, but the passage doesn't explain why certain technologies THEMSELVES can't be implemented profitably; it was the circumstances of their adoption that caused a problem (see line 24 -- it was Brazil's infrastructure). The technologies Brazil might have adopted could have been excellent. "Cannot be implemented profitably" is too extreme.

(B) is correct.

(C) is too narrow. The author is doing more than just illustrating the successes of renewable resources. She also deals with failings and reasons.

(D) and (E) are wrong for similar reason to why (A) is wrong. The passage is concerned with factors surrounding the implementation, not the type of technology, itself.

Thank you for clarify that! I agree with you that the author's tone at the end is positive which shall be reflected in the answer choice. Answer A clearly does not catch that. However, I think the author does explain why certain promising technologies cannot be implemented profitably, not by discussing the drawbacks of those technologies, but blaming the project leader's short sight. Answer D and E attribute implementing failure to technologies, which are clearly wrong.

Your explanation is very helpful anyway, thank you!

Choices D and E were COMPLETELY OMITTED from the text in the book containing Exams 41-50. Please advise as to precisely how the choices read and please take action to prevent this error from occurring in future printings of the book.

Thank you.

Hey Alex,

Sorry about that. The error will be corrected in future versions.

(D) comparing and contrasting two types of renewable energy technology and giving examples of the benefits and drawbacks of each.

(E) discussing two types of renewable energy resources and analyzing why one is more easily implemented than the other

Thanks!
