Q19

Correct answer choice: D

I originally chose C for this question and had D as strong contenders. I went with C rather than D just because of a mindset. The mentioning of someone's name would likely be to give credits to them. It's hard to think of it as "laying the groundwork."

However, C is wrong because there was no mentioning of Yi-Fu Tuan to be the original developer of the hypothesis about clearings that the author favors. The author simply mentions Yi-Fu Tuan as one who has a favorable argument.

In the passage, the purpose of paragraph 1 is to introduce the resource-procurement model, paragraph 2 is to lay out the problematic presuppositions of the resource-procurement model. Starting with paragraph 3, the author turns to discuss the noneconomic model, which he favors. Thus, it could be said that the author's mentioning of Yi-fu Tuan at the beginning of paragraph 3 is to lay the groundwork for the hypothesis he prefers.

A and B are wrong because the idea of Yi-Fu Tuan is not one that the author seeks to challenge.

E is wrong because there is no compare and contrast between Yi-Fu Tuan's and the author's idea.

Thoughts on this?

Nice write-up!

I initially found a few of these answer choices tempting, because I knew that Tuan was mentioned around the point of the passage when we transitioned from the “accepted” view to the new noneconomic view.

When we re-read that part in the passage, we see that Tuan is only assigned the point of view of “humans have always had a fear of the wilderness”. Tuan doesn’t stake any position on woodland clearings.

So (A) and (B) and (C) and (E) are all out, because they’re saying that Tuan made some sort of argument about woodland clearings.

The idea of “lay the groundwork” in (D) matches up nicely with “If we apply this [Tuan’s] insight to the Mesolithic era, our view of woodland clearings may change”. The AUTHOR is taking Tuan’s idea about fear of wilderness and applying it to woodland clearings. Tuan never did such a thing.

Hope this helps.
