Q19

Is C the correct answer because it mentions a "producer" and one of the products he uses? What makes the other answers poor choices? I am at a loss on this question.

Thanks!

Thanks for posting!

On a question like this, it's important to come up with a decent answer in your own words. What are the key features of the Ford-Noguchi relationship? We have to look back at the passage: Buckminster Fuller suggests that Noguchi use chrome-nickel steel, which Henry Ford had recently made commercially available for the first time.

So Ford made a product available, and Noguchi appropriated it for a totally different use.

(C) is correct, then, because it has those key characteristics. The producer starts using this new material, and the rock climber finds out about it and starts using it for something completely different.

(A) is no good because the dealer starts marketing something after hearing the architect praise it; this would be like Noguchi praising chrome-nickel steel, and then Ford deciding to produce it. It's backwards.

(B) is incorrect because the manufacturer suggests that the skier use the material. But Ford didn't suggest the steel to Noguchi, Fuller did.

(D) is out because it has nothing to do with appropriating something for a different purpose.

(E) is incorrect for the same reason.

Does that answer your question?
