(A) is too narrow in scope. We're looking for the main point of the passage, which is going to have to include a mention of the healthful effects of wine, since over 2/3 of the passage is devoted to this positive discussion. (A) only references the first paragraph.

(B) is also too narrow and also a distortion and therefore unsupported: what belief that heart disease is caused solely by high lipid levels? Where is that?

(C) is likewise too narrow! 3 for 3!

(D) is the opposite of what we're looking for.

(E) is correct.

Hope this helps!

I just thought I would mention why A is wrong. A and E are very similar in that both imply that wine has healthful effects. But A suggests far more than that... beer and distilled spirits... "their" healthful effects. The author clearly does not believe that beer and distilled spirits have healthful effects like wine. E, on the other hand, limits those effects to wine and makes it clear that the other alcoholic beverages do not share that healthful quality.

Can someone explain why E wouldn't be out of scope? It doesn't mention the flaw in the previous studies. I thought this was the catalyst for the whole passage, so ended up choosing A (even though I too saw this as narrow scope).

Thanks!
