I chose B, which felt supported by B, para 2 and A, middle of para 3.
Is this choice wrong because paradoxical is too strong?

I chose B as well, but I see why D is correct.
While B definitely describes passage 2, it does not describe passage 1. Passage 1 argues that Griots and Blues Musicians are not similar, they have little in common. When it describes the Griot it says that they had great status because they preserved culture and tradition. This is a parallel, not a paradox. And the Blue Musicians as well play songs of alienation because they were alienated. This too is a similarity between the culture's values and the artists themselves.
D on the other hand describes both passages in the very way we've just described.
And the others,
A - no musical traditions are described replacing other institutions.
C - Passage 1 does that, but passage two only describes one musical tradition.
E - Passage 1 criticizes a view, but passage 2 describes it directly.
