Q22

by romanmuffin Fri Aug 05, 2011 7:37 pm

I chose B because it only talks about lipid processing, which I did not equate with the removal of lipids from the bloodsteam, as answer B states.

I quickly glanced over A because the passage does talk about the platelet adhesiveness, which influences the degree to which platelets cause blood to clot. I suppose this was a craftily designed answer, but I can't seem to figure it out.

Thanks so much in advance

If you look at answer choices A and D you will see that one talks about "increase to the degree to which platelets cause blood to clot" and the other "increased activity of a natural compound that reduces blood clotting."

We need to know if reducing blood clotting or increasing blood clotting might help prevent premature heart disease.

The third paragraph is where this information can be found. The first sentence in this paragraph expands on where we left off in the second paragraph about what could explain the healthful effects that wine may be having in the drastic decline of premature heart disease among European populations.

It talks about how studies showed that there was increased activity of a natural clot-BREAKING compound used to restore normal blood flow through block vessels in victims of heart disease.

So we can see that a blood clot is not a great thing in this circumstance. Would answer choice seem to indicate to you that it might help prevent heart disease?

How could an increase in the degree to which platelets cause blood to clot help prevent PHD? We know from the study that a clot-breaking compound was helping to restore blood flow through blocked vessels.

Lines 17-22 state that the body's processing of lipids is strongly affected alcohol. It also says that this causes dangerous increases in these levels (lipid levels). It states in the very next line that these increases are a large contributing factor in the development of PHD.

Thus, we know that an increase in body's ability to remove these lipids from the bloodstream would seem to help prevent PHD.
