Q22

by mxl392 Tue Jul 24, 2012 4:38 pm

I had a lot of trouble picking between D and C. In these situations I usually try to find the one that is wrong, but I can't see why D is wrong. Where in the passage does the author make the distinction between "fake" and "[not] authentic"?

The answer is (D)!

And (C) is too narrow in scope, also arguable unsupportable. But if you were swayed by it, you may be falling for narrow scope answer choices to main point questions. Look out for them.

Check out the passage map I just uploaded on the forum link for this passage, by the way, if you want!

I really didn't like the answer choices...

I mean the entire passages were dedicated to book Fake and the answer choice should have said something that is relevant to line 6: "the art of deception reveals the study's broader concerns."

how is D really supported by the passage?
I mean I know it does but C does too...

I feel as though D is all about last paragraph...

I didn't like any of the answer choices as well. For what it's worth, I chose answer (A) because it kinda alluded to the whole chronology thing discussed in paragraph two, which was the largest portion of the passage.

Incorrect Answers:
(A): Now that I think about it, we don't have enough information to conclude this. The killing blow comes from the last paragraph, specifically the first sentence (additionally, medieval Europe was a time when faking was "virtually nonexistent"). Additionally, armed with the fact that the correct answer is D, it doesn't touch upon the complexities surround fakes.
(B): I initially crossed this off because I didn't really recall much about artistic merit being discussed (or at least I don't remember explicitly seeing this word). But this is wrong because the passage doesn't make a comparison of importance between being a fake, and having artistic merit
(C): Straight up, way too narrow. Additionally, authenticity can be determined, as illustrated in the third paragraph
(E): International market support? Immediately cross this out

Correct Answer (D): This is supported by the first paragraph, namely lines 6-8 (you can throw in lines 4-5 as well). Additionally, this is supported by the third paragraph.

I didn't like answer (D) because it kinda neglected paragraph two. But it's the best of the bunch. Now that I'm skimming the passage again, I think it's also supported by the last part in paragraph two with the discussion of Michelangelo.
