Q23

by pinkdatura Wed Sep 29, 2010 2:47 am

I understand that this question directs me to paragraph 1, talking about a certain level of complexity, coherence, comprehensible

Pls help me to see if I use the right logic to eliminate each choice
A diversified preference
C prefer large quantity ?
D fast vs slow music
E bitter vs sweet
neither of this address coherence, make people easy to comprehensible(ln8)

Sort of a tricky question. You have to realize - as you did - that the question refers to the latter preference, which begins with line 8, not the initial preference for something more complex than a single tone.

As for your wrong-answer explanations:

I agree with those, however I think (A) is wrong because there's no comprehending white noise. It's too complex or disorganized. Wrong side of the issue.

My downfall with this problem was the fact that the Q asked for a preference that is analogous to the FIRST PARAGRAPH.

I chose (A) because white noise is basically continuous noise that is relaxing for most people. However, that refers to the 3rd paragraph.

Thus, (B) is correct because it refers to the principle of coherence, which is stated in the 1st paragraph.

Argh, misreading question stems make me feel stupid.

I think the key to eliminating (A) is that the preference stated in paragraph 1––"We prefer some sort of coherence, a principle that connects the various SOUNDS." White noise is only one sound; it fails to demonstrate a sense of coherence because there's no other sounds.

Reading your response made me realize something I had not before. The meaning of coherence is when things logically connect and come together, so even if you didn't know this definition, you could've turned to the word "connects," which the sentence also mentions. Similar to how music is a bunch of sounds coming together to create a song for example, a movie uses a bunch of events/scenes which ultimately come together and create its plot.

I've learned that the key to analogy questions is having a good understanding of the parts as well as their relationship.
