Q24

by sharrin7 Tue Mar 01, 2011 2:39 pm

So, this is the question that truly tripped me up. It is my understanding that, if plan 1 is given as a plan that occurred, it can be the only plan that occurred. I based on the fact that "two assignments of apprentices to projects will be made" and on the fact that plan 1 has two reassignments.

Therefore, since plan 1 is stated as occuring in Q24 either L and N will be reassigned first (leaving NMLO matching up with QRST) or M and O will be reassigned first (leaving LONM matching up with QRST). Am I right in the set-up so far?

And if so, could someone explain why C is not the correct answer?

Although, I do acknowledge that the questions asks "must be true" and technically, since the order of plan 1 is unknown answer C does not have to be true. I just don't understand how the right answer is right.

Thanks for posting!

You're misinterpreting the game setup. During the year, "two
reassignments of apprentices to projects will be made, each time according to a different one of the following plans, which can be used in any order ..."

Note the wording: two reassignments will be made, each time according to a different one of the following plans.

That means one reassignment = one plan. So Plan 1? That's one reassignment. It doesn't matter how many people are involved in it.

A clue that you were misinterpreting it should have been that in Plan 1, it says, Q and S switch and R and T switch -- not or.

Now that we've cleared that up, I'm sure you'll see that after Plan 1, L is on S and M is on T. So no matter which other plan you choose next, L and M have to switch places, which leaves L assigned to project T.

does that clear this up for you?

If you use say Plan 1 for the very first re-assignment, can you also use Plan 1 again for the second re-assignment? Or do you have to use a Plan you didn't previously use? So in this case would I be required to use only Plan 2 or Plan 3 for the second re-assignment?

I got all the questions on this game right except for Q24

Here's what I did:

We have
Q R S T
L M N O

Plan 1:
Q R S T
N O L M

Plan 2:
Q R S T
L M O N

Plan 3:
Q R S T
M L N O

When I did this I got all the questions right but now I'm confused with Q24 How can A be right when L was never assigned to T in my setup?. Unless, I did it wrong which I'm sure I did in this case. I think I should have followed the 2nd plan from the 1st plan and the 3rd plan from the 2nd plan but even when I did that it didnt make sense to me because I would not be able to get at least Q20 right. Can someone please explain where I went wrong?

When I just did this game, I decided to go through all the possibilities, as it was only going to be six ways. And then you quickly notice that with Plan 1, either plan 2 or 3 will garner the same result, so it is really only 5.

Start with the original - 1 - 2/3

Start with the original - 2 - 1
Start with the original - 2 - 3

Start with the original - 3 - 1
Start with the original - 3 - 2

So in regards to #24, our local information provided is to start off considering the results after plan 1 for the first reassignment and think about what must be true.

After the first reassignment with Plan 1, we have:

Q R S T
N O L M

And like we talked about earlier, the second reassignment would include either Plan 2 or Plan 3, yet the result would be same: L and M will be switched from S to T.

So we would have

Q R S T
N O M L

Answer choice (A).
