Q25

by velvet Wed May 02, 2012 7:05 pm

I was down to (A) and (C).

I see that the correct answer (C) is supported by lines 44-49 + the fact in the beginning of the passage that anarchists believe they don't have a moral duty to obey gov. laws (14-15).

However, I like (A). Is it wrong because it's too far of a logical leap to say that people are subject to more moral obligations than what is believed to be the case? Reading the last paragraph and about all these natural-law type moral obligations made me think it wasn't too much of a stretch to pick (A).

(A) is too much of a stretch, yes. The last paragraph is about how people have moral obligations that aren't derived from the government. But that doesn't mean that there are more of them than people generally believe. We have no idea how many moral obligations are "generally held" to exist. We know that "some commentators" (line 15) make assumptions about the implications of philosophical anarchism, and that philosophical anarchists maintain there are basic moral duties (line 38), but whether these are more or less than what people generally think is not discussed in the passage.

(B) is not in the passage.

(D) is likewise not consistent with the passage.

(E) is unsupported as well.

Hope this helps!

I don't get how E is wrong.

It's the author using that example to help shore up the sentence before about crimes in most legal systems?

Did you mean to post that for question 26 (shodges)? E in question 25 is essentially the very antithesis of anarchism.

I too see why letter C is correct due to line 40.

However I went with letter D, because line 5 says "it is also commonly supposed that such cases are special exceptions and that, in general....we generally have a moral duty to obey the law simply because it is the law". It sounds like the author is acknowledging there are a number people who would tie obeying laws directly to moral obligations.

Can someone help with this?
