Q26 - Science Adacemy study: It has

by pistachio2014 Fri Sep 17, 2010 5:24 pm

Eliminated all answer choices. Don't really understand how choice E answers the question, "Which one of the following is the most adequate evaluation of the logical force of the critics' response?"

Well, the study only claims that some farms can use natural methods to reduce the amounts of pesticide, etc., that they use. The critics' response -- "What about the farms that can't do this?" -- is totally irrelevant, because the study doesn't claim anything about all or even most farms, just some.

Imagine if I said, "Some birds can fly." Would it affect my argument at all if you said, "Wait a minute, you're forgetting about penguins!" No, it wouldn't, because the fact that some birds don't fly has no bearing on the fact that some birds do.

Likewise, the fact that some farms can't succeed using natural methods doesn't affect the claim that some farms can.

So answer (E) is correct. The study is only claiming that successfully using natural methods is possible, so the critics' complaint that not all farmers were taken into account is irrelevant.

It's just saying "which of the following best describes the issue with the logic used by the critics"

In this case it's E.

The science academy says "its possible to increase yields naturally, look it worked with these farmers."

The critics say "Wait a minute. IT'S NOT POSSIBLE, TO INCREASE YIELDS NATURALLY because it only worked for a SELECT FEW.

issue: who cares if it only worked for a few. we are just saying this is possible, we really only need it to work for one farmer to prove POSSIBLILITY. PLAUSIBILITY is a different issue.

The critics may have been justified if they said "It isn't possible to have 'wide spread' yield increases using natural methods.

I don't like how the question is worded at all.

I didn't notice the flaw in the critic's argument so I wasn't looking for a flaw in the AC (and so I incorrectly chose D). I understand why E is correct though.

Just for future reference, does 'most adequate evaluation of logic' usually mean find the flaw?

Thanks!
