Q3 - It might seem that an airline

by jardinsouslapluie5 Tue May 08, 2012 7:27 am

Wrong answers are obvious, but I don't understand the grammer on correct answer (C).

I don't understand the first part of the sentences, "Across~filled"

Could anybody explain, please?

Answer choice C is stating that these reduced airfares are filling up planes that were already filled up normally.

So the airline would have made more money had it not offered the reduced airfare. This would not necessarily be true if the reduced airfare perhaps enticed so many more people to travel on other flights, such as flights that once carried maybe 5 people, and if we could fully book those flights with this strategy, we may have a success.

However, answer choice C shows fully why this reduced airfare program has brought about a cut in profits. We are told that they fail to attract people to unpopular flights as well.

Why is (D) wrong?
I thought if they could only attract small number of new customer, they would result in a deficit...
(They could sell large number of tickets, but if those are regular customers they had before, and they could only persuade small number of new customer to buy the ticket...wouldn't it cut the airline's profits?)

Thank you

it's just my opinon

how can just a small number of people lead to the result of the sale of LARGE numbers of reduced-price tickets?I think that's why this answer choice doesn't work in the statments

Yes, that is why (D) doesn't work! Thanks for chiming in.

The correct answer must explain BOTH sides of the paradox. In this case, that's both:

-why large numbers of tickets are being sold
-why this isn't making more money and in fact is making less

Timmydoeslsat did a great job of explaining how (C) does this.

As for the others:

(A) doesn't explain the large numbers, either.
(B) and (E) miss the point.
