Q5

by rishisb Mon Jul 19, 2010 2:15 am

Greetings:

Could you please explain why answer E is the correct answer for Q5?

I did NOT select E because I thought that lines 37-40 did explain why the okapis animals leave a lot of their "preferred" plants un-eaten: The passage says that "...okapis will leave much of it uneaten, choosing to move on and sample over leaves." (my italics). As the italtic portion indiciates, I thought that sounded like a a reason why the animals don't eat much of their "preferred plants."

(Plus, the passage says -- a few lines before - that these guys don't eat any single plant to the exclusion of others. )

As usual: Many thanks in advance.

Well not exactly. This is one of those LSAT tricks they pull on us every once in a while. It's just a play on words...

In lines 37-40 (the exact sames you used in your support) the passage says that the okapis leave much preferred foliage uneaten, but it does not say why the okapis leave such foliage uneaten.

Does that make sense to you? By having the question not answered, discussed in the passage, it makes it more difficult to spot the odd-man-out!

carenthusiast 911:

I think the difference lies in the representation of the two lines.

Statements in the stimulus said this in 39- 40:
" Okapis will leave much of it uneaten, choosing to move on and sample other leaves."

I (incorrectly) interpreted this statement to say:

"Okapis will leave much of it uneaten, choosing to move on to/in order to sample other leaves."

What's the difference? The first statement gives us only two events occurring one after another. The second statement, my statement, makes a CAUSAL ASSUMPTION.

Maybe ManhattanLSAT moderators can clarify further but I think this was our mistake.

Hope this helps!

:( :( :( :(

I actually got this right on my first attempt but I changed it to C on my review! I can't believe the LSAT here, this is such a bad question.

Let's look at E:

Why do Okapis leave much preferred foliage uneaten? Survey says: Okapi never eat only one plant to the exclusion of other plants.

That seems to answer it pretty clearly to me, they have a diversity of tastes.

Now C: Why do Okapi limit themselves to the forest interior?

Consider that we need information from the passage, that's what the question is asking for. All we get to explain this are some hypothesis, which I don't know, can we consider that information. I'm thinking of information as evidence, something substantial, and so I see the hypothesis for why they don't venture out to not qualify as such.
