Q6

by allenkw90 Sun Sep 16, 2018 10:05 am

I got this question wrong and I believe it's because I misunderstood the question.

Does the question asking what principle the author is REFERRING TO when he/she mentions "existing generic parameter"?

If so, then I guess answer choice (A) makes perfect sense.

I read the word "include" in the question and interpreted it as what NEW PRINCIPLE the author WOULD LIKE to include to this exisitng generic parameters.

So I ended up choosing E over D.

Now that I think about it, I think it was a dumb, time consuming move. But I would I appreciate some clarification. Thanks!

Yeah, I think the operative word would be EXISTING generic parameters.

It sounds like you were answering it more based on what the author WOULD LIKE TO INCLUDE among generic parameters.

Since the author thinks that the autobiographers in this passage are breaking the mold, he thinks that they go against the EXISTING generic parameters.

This question stem is basically asking us, "Which of these answers describes something that the autobiographers in this passage have ignored / flouted / contradicted?"

The line reference from 52 would basically mean that we're saying ....
"Rather than forcing their histories to conform to [the correct answer choice to Q6], these writers have done something different (revolutionary)"

We know from line 28-29 that one of these writers did not write in chronological order, so if (A) were one of the existing generic parameters, then we know that one of these writers is NOT conforming to this expectation of the genre.

Hope this helps.

Why is D incorrect?

Is it because of “single work"? While in the passage it stated "mixed structure of these WORKS?"

Or is it incorrect because those works mentioned in the passage are works (autobiography) with mixed structure of sketches and poems, rather than poems and sketches collected in a single work?

Thanks!
