Is C correct because the author says an emphasis on Thoreau's essay prevents people from realizing how King and transcendentalism share some ideas??
So at least Thoreau and transcendentalism do not agree on those ideas...
Thank you

In lines 23-27 the author states that "Civil Disobedience" by Thoreau was the only transcendentalist work King was familiar with. Had he known other transcendentalist works, King would have found ideas more akin to his own. That means that in the works of other transcendentalist works there were ideas that differed from Thoreau's. This supports answer choice (C).

Incorrect Answers
(A) is unsupported. Thoreau was a transcendentalist, but not necessarily the first.
(B) is an unsupported comparison trap. We only know about the influence of Thoreau on King, not on contemporary thinkers and not relative to others.
(D) is unsupported. Thoreau did not seek to force policy changes in the federal government. Although he did protest the Mexican War, he did not seek to change the government's policy.
(E) is contradicted. The passage suggests Thoreau was more focused on individual reform.
