I thought this question was rather difficult for being part of the first reading passage. However, I think a trend in the last few tests is a more difficult reading passage (not just extra-lengthy) at the beginning, and an easier reading passage at the end.
In regard to this question:
(A) Incorrect. We don't know that the films are "well-known"; in fact, it seems that scholarship about AA US entertainment history is insufficient (lines 13-18). So, the films would seem not to be "well-known."
(B) Incorrect. We don't know that the author participated in the ventures; we only know that the author interviewed Tucker.
(C) Incorrect. The author notes insufficient scholarship on a subject, and then explains a detailed study of the subject where facts are verified and a biography is built which should "shed new light on a part of the US entertainment history." Thus, it would appear that the author, at the least, aspires to be recognized.
(D) Correct. lukas.marko did wonderful in highlighting why this answer is correct.
(E) Incorrect. This passage is focused on AA performers related to a part of the US entertainment industry (theater and film). This answer just mentions AA performers in general (which could include music). We don't know how the biography undertaken by the author compares with the broader community of performers.
