Q7

by lukas.marko Fri Nov 09, 2012 10:26 pm

How is the correct answer D? I don't see how this is supported by the text at all. I am looking at lines 24-26. Am I missing something?

mrizza on TLS helped me with this. Here is my explanation for D:

For Q7 I was looking at 24-26, yet still couldn't prove the answer choice. I think I understand it now though. The thing that threw me off was "preponderance". It says "preponderance of the films in which Tucker performed", so if we translate preponderance to majority, D is technically correct, but only because the first paragraph indicates Tucker acted in 20 films. There were 10 films used in the analysis, and 10 is not a majority of 20. So to prove D is correct, you would have to use lines 24-26 in conjunction with line 5 and know that "preponderance" here means at least 51% of something - a not-so-easy task in real time I think :S. This is a really hard inference... if you got #7 right the first time kudos to you.

OK, I get why that would be correct now, but can you help explain why C is wrong? In the first paragraph he says no one has talked about Tucker, and there's been "insufficient scholarship" which to me support him not planning on being very mainstream..

I thought this question was rather difficult for being part of the first reading passage. However, I think a trend in the last few tests is a more difficult reading passage (not just extra-lengthy) at the beginning, and an easier reading passage at the end.

In regard to this question:

(A) Incorrect. We don't know that the films are "well-known"; in fact, it seems that scholarship about AA US entertainment history is insufficient (lines 13-18). So, the films would seem not to be "well-known."
(B) Incorrect. We don't know that the author participated in the ventures; we only know that the author interviewed Tucker.
(C) Incorrect. The author notes insufficient scholarship on a subject, and then explains a detailed study of the subject where facts are verified and a biography is built which should "shed new light on a part of the US entertainment history." Thus, it would appear that the author, at the least, aspires to be recognized.
(D) Correct. lukas.marko did wonderful in highlighting why this answer is correct.
(E) Incorrect. This passage is focused on AA performers related to a part of the US entertainment industry (theater and film). This answer just mentions AA performers in general (which could include music). We don't know how the biography undertaken by the author compares with the broader community of performers.
