I guess (D) is come from the last paragraph, but not sure which lines explicitly answer (D)?

Thank you

You are correct. (D) comes the final paragraph, in fact the last two sentences.

Lines 51-53 explain how Stilgoe could have strengthened his argument, saying "if he had done ___, his case would have been much stronger".

== other answers ==

(A) 9 - 11
(B) 2 - 3
(C) 21 -22
(E) correct ... no info on HOW they supported the railroad

Question did not lend itself to pre phasing.

A. Line 11
B. Line 3
C. Hold
D. Line 52-53
E. Hold

I went looking originally for E but was unable to find it so I went back to C. I found "ambivalence" in lines 50-51, but I do not know for sure whether these writers are from the 1830s or later. But, by referring back to the second paragraph we can confirm Thoreau and Hawthorne were writing in the 1830s.

C is correct.
