Q7

by einuoa Sun Jul 27, 2014 5:39 pm

I got the right answer through the process of elimination but was very fixated on the word "unambitious" as I feel like that didn't have any support from the passage. I paraphrased the critics' position to be "Don't venture out of detective fiction, remain true to detective fiction," but I don't know whether detective fiction itself is an unambitious literary genre and that seems to be a bit of a stretch that bothered me about this answer.

Could anyone could explain this, thank you!

Yes, detective fiction is in the category of the "slightly lowbrow" and "enjoyable" but not "true literature" mentioned in lines 5-9. So we can infer from this that is less ambitious...that is a reasonable inference in this question given that the other 4 answer choices are clearly wrong (as you did! Well done).

(A) The talent of CRITICS has nothing to do with it, nor are we given any comparison between critics and creators. Also, we're looking for a view the CRITICS hold. They wouldn't view this of themselves.

(B) Again, the critics would not think this about themselves.

(C) is too specific and not why the author thinks critics are snobs.

(D) is correct.

(E) is like (C), unsupported, and not the reason for the snobbery.
