Can someone please explain why this is complete rejection and not reluctant? I thought complete was the trick answer because it was too extreme

If the author let us know that he/she agreed with the critics in some way, it would be partial. But the author tells us what the critics think, then tells us that it's more complex than that and elaborates on how.

I see why you may be suspicious of "complete" at first given that "complex" isn't a judgment as severe as "wrong" or some other clearly negative word, but "reluctant" is actually the unsupported word here. The author doesn't give us any clues that he/she is hesitant or feels uncomfortable disagreeing with the critics.

I was tricked by "complex" also

However, the position of the critics is that she somehow shortchanged herself and that the domestic novel purposes were more apparent than the slave narrative. However, the rest of the passage is written to refute this view, culminating by saying that the novel was "anti domestic" in line 49. This proves that the author is in complete disagreement with the critics  .
