Q9

Hi all,

Is B wrong because it mentions burial grounds instead of specific artifacts left behind? I felt like the passage gave reasons for why certain characteristics are likely to result in standing while other characteristics reduce the chances of being granted standing, so I was drawn to this answer.

I had it down to B and C and wrongly chose B. What is the best plan of attack here when I was caught up between these two answer choices? It sucks to start off missing the primary purpose question.

I certainly see why you were confused here. (B) and (C) are similar, and I had to think about (B) for a moment, too. The problem is that (B) is really only about the first paragraph, which focuses on the features of the graves themselves as determining if the law can protect them.

The rest of the passage is about law that applies to the contents of the graves regardless of the graves' features. (B) misses all of this and just focuses on the certain characteristics of the burial grounds. It's too narrow in scope.

(C) correctly captures the broader point of the passage.

As to your question, I'd definitely be on the lookout for wrong answer choices to primary purpose questions like these"”they're not unsupported, they're just not the overall primary purpose. They are too narrow.

As for the other answers:

(A) isn't the point"”the author isn't trying to argue how legal protection can be enhanced.

(D) is unsupported"”it's not about why courts care.

(E) is also too narrow and doesn't concern the last 2/3 of the passage.
