Sure, the context sentence before the quote they're asking us about is 27-32, in which they've just said this about Marsalis:
- unbending classicism (stubbornly insistent on classics)
- sanctified a canon of his own choosing (picked a certain groups of songs as THE BEST SONGS)
- codified music (gave it rules)
- stifling orthodoxy (harsh, strict rules)
- inhibited innovative impulses
(A) reviving DISCREDITED ideas? No.
(B) MERELY RECOMBINED other's ideas? That's not the same as "plays the old fashioned hits". It's saying, "made a style by combining these people's styles".
(C) Yes. "strict adherence to tradition" = "stifling orthodoxy / unbending classicism"
(D) Reinvented / reinterpreted ≠ "INHIBITED innovation"
(E) INAUTHENTIC musical ideas? No.
When you're reading (D), I think you're thinking
"Marsalis resurrected / reinvigorated interest in retro music"
But it's saying that
"Marsalis took retro music and then reinvented it and reinterpreted it". I think the author gives him some credit for doing so, later in the passage, but this question is testing the former executive, who represents the negative viewpoint on Marsalis.
