starting to practice RC questions

by junepkwon Tue Feb 15, 2011 7:18 pm

Hello,

I have been focusing most of my focus/attention to LR and LG, while somewhat being more lax on the RC, and it shows when I take practice tests. I’m not sure what strategies I can use to help with me RC, other than 1. read the passage, 2. answer the questions based on the reading. I assumed it would be straight forward, however, with 4 passages under time constraints, panic, weird wording within the passages, etc. it's not what I thought the RC would be. I feel like I am missing the correct approach to this section and do not feel as though I am practicing these in the effective way.

How should I be approaching these RC questions? (I realize there is always a set of 4 different types of topics, I notice the medical and some legal passages throw me off.)

Thank you for your time.

My recommendation is to pay attention to the topic only in so far as it helps you get an early impression for whether you're going to be interested in the information/or not!

Here's some advice I posted to a previous question:

There are two key ideas on getting through the questions more quickly. It requires knowing what information the questions are testing.

To effectively and quickly answer the questions, you need to be able to determine the central argument, the proponents of each side, and the essential evidence in support of each side. Also, you need to be able to clearly and in an abstract way, describe the passage organization. When the passage organization is weak, the central arguments are more clear. When the central argument is less clear, the passage organization is strong. Focus on both and you'll have success in RC.

Good luck!
