Why is answer (B) wrong?

by mmoon Sat Mar 18, 2017 10:16 pm

For this question, I answered (B) :

All human capacities can be explained in terms
of the evolutionary advantages they offer.

because the passages A and B both talks about the evolutionary advantages language and music can offer. That is, both can help communicate emotion (Passage A) and music can strengthen mother-baby bond (Passage B).

I am guessing that the reason that (B) is wrong is because it says "All" human capacities, and thus making a generalization out of the two examples given.

Is my understanding of the reason for why (B) is wrong correct?

Yes, you're correct!

Be very, very alert to and wary of strong language on this test! It's the most common one-word reason for an answer to be wrong.

The author of psg A is only writing about music's connection to language. She isn't making any wild claims that ALL things can be explained adaptively.

Does she even think MUSIC can be explained by its adaptive benefits?

Line 25-27 seem to suggest the opposite.

(By the way, for the sake of future RC postings ... if you have a question on #13 in this RC passage, and no one has started that thread yet, then you post a new topic, as you did, and write question #13, instead of giving it a subject line. Thanks!)
