that should be the comparison... and that's exactly why E does not work (because hungary is not the subject).

do you understand the meaning of the sentence? if so, then you should understand exactly what the main verb is.

what's your understanding of what the sentence MEANS?

Hello Ron,
I direly need your help on this one.
Is following another way to eliminate incorrect choices?

In Hungary, as in much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women work, many of which are in middle management and light industry.

(A) as in much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women work, many of which are [working]in
(B) as with much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women works, many [work] in
(C) as in much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women work, many of them [work]in
(D) like much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women works, and many are [working]
(E) like much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women work, many are[working] in

a word omitted must appear in the first part of the sentence.
Am i spot on on this one?

Ok no problem, i think i better leave that issue.

I have another question regarding placement in D and E

In Hungary, like much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women works

is this thing allowed anyway?
I mean following is allowed
Like Europe, hungry is a country--> correct

following one is not allowed
Like Europe, in Hungary an overwhelming proportion of women works-> not allowed
--> Like X, Y--> Y cannot be prepositional phrase

similarly is following( construction in D and E) allowed?
In Hungary, like much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women works

Summarizing
,like means comparison with subject
Like Europe, in Hungary an overwhelming proportion of women works
even though in Hungary is not subject but the placement of prepositional phrase( in Hungary) is acceptable
Is placement of in Hungary in D and E also problematic?

^^ yes (although europe is not a country)

following one is not allowed
Like Europe, in Hungary an overwhelming proportion of women works-> not allowed
--> Like X, Y--> Y cannot be prepositional phrase

this construction doesn't work unless "x" and "y" are nouns.

In Hungary, like much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women works

this sentence would only work if the intended meaning were...
In Hungary, like X, Y does Z.

in other words, if the entire blue thing is an observation that's true in hungary, THEN this sentence could be written this way.
...and even then it's a pretty weird construction, and i'd be willing to bet $$$ that GMAC will never write a correct answer like this.

i'm sorry, but i don't understand anything you wrote after "summarizing".

as long as "them" is referring to a plural noun, it's fine.
it makes no difference whether that noun is a subject, an object, or something else.

Dear Ron,

Many of them and Each of them makes the sentence Independent. Below is the sentence.

Taste buds are onion-shaped structures with between 50 and 100 taste cells, each of them has fingerlike projections poking through the opening located at the top of the taste bud called the taste pore.

(A) them has fingerlike projections poking through the opening located at the top of the taste bud called the taste pore

Whereas each of which or many of whom is the correct usage and doesnt make the sentence IC.

How come here many of them is the correct ans?

I think you meant this to be an example of an incorrect sentence, as this one would need an "and" to connect the two independent parts of the sentence:

Taste buds are onion-shaped structures with between 50 and 100 taste cells, AND each of them has fingerlike projections poking through the opening located at the top of the taste bud called the taste pore.

The reason is that the second part ("each.... has ....projections") is a complete clause, and needs a FANBOY, not just a comma, to connect to the first part ("Taste buds are ....structures") which is also a complete clause. Without "and," this was a run-on sentence.

In the original example in this thread, "many of them" does NOT present the same issue in (C), because everything after the comma is not a complete clause.

Here's (C):
In Hungary, as in much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women work, many of them in middle management and light industry.

There is no verb after "many," so the only clause is the main one ("a proportion...work"), and this is not a run-on sentence. Instead, the "many of them..." serves as a modifier. That was the big difference between the Hungary question and your example.

@Esledge
Emily. I saw one of your posts about counting verbs to determines whether there is a noun comparison or clauses.
in the OP, there is only one verb but that verb belonged to another subject. I may be overthinking this, but how would that thought process work in this case?
