I'm not saying your rule isn't correct. I use my instinct on whether things sound "GMAT-like" all the time. And when I'm forced to guess between answer choices, I will ultimately rely on my ear. However, I recommend not using this as a first instinct and looking for other issues, as I've always managed to find bigger issues on questions like these.
